Heritage Golf Group, a Northern Virginia-based golf club owner, has bought Independence Golf Club at 600 Founders Bridge Blvd. in Midlothian. The real estate sold for $9.53 million in late October 2026, according to Richmond BizSense's review of county property records. The purchase of the club's business assets closed September 10, 2026, at a price that was not disclosed.

Independence sits on the Chesterfield-Powhatan county line, with a Midlothian address and most of its roughly 260 acres in Powhatan County. It is also a gathering place for the area's business community, with the Tavern 19 restaurant, meeting rooms and event space. Heritage cited the club's longstanding relationships with local businesses in announcing the purchase.

A 25-year-old club joins a national group

Independence opened in 2001 as the centerpiece of the Founders Bridge residential development, with support from benefactors including E. Claiborne Robins Jr. and Harry Easterly Jr. The Championship Course was originally designed by Tom Fazio. Heritage's announcement says Golf Digest ranks it No. 18 in Virginia and that it hosted the Virginia State Golf Association's Men's State Open from 2007 to 2013 and again from 2020 to 2026.

Pros Inc. bought the 260-acre property in 2013 for $3 million from the Virginia State Golf Association's foundation.

Independence was Heritage's 50th club when the company announced the purchase in September 2026. The company has since added a 51st. Heritage, acquired by private equity firm KSL Capital Partners, now owns three clubs in central Virginia: Independence, the Dominion Club in Henrico County and Spring Creek Golf Club in Louisa County.

What the buyer and seller have said

Jim Oliver, Heritage's chief operating officer, said in the company's announcement that "we look forward to building on the strong foundation already in place."

Breed told BizSense in April 2026 that he wanted a buyer who would keep the property in golf. "I think it needs to be a golf course," he said.

Most Heritage clubs are private. Whether Independence will remain open to daily-fee players has not yet been determined. As of November 2026, the club's website continues to describe it as public.

What to watch

  • Public access. Any change to daily-fee play or memberships will show in the club's rates and booking.

  • Investment. Heritage says it invests in its clubs; specific plans for Independence have not yet been announced.

  • Dining and events. Tavern 19 and the club's meeting and event spaces are the parts of the property local businesses use most directly.
